Cool ‘hangout’ in Amsterdam

LOCATION

Toki can be found  in the Jordaan neighbourhood.

THE SPACE

Set up by Jeff Flink, who used to work in advertising, the philosophy of this space seems to be about creating good times via good quality coffee, teas and other produce in a relaxed setting. It’s fair to say the space is ‘designed’. ‘Marmoreal’ marble by Max Lamb is used for: the two tier bench where one can perch with a cuppa; counter top slabs playing host to pastries; and the large communal table in the back of the shop.

The moss green sofa (also in the back of the shop) is by LA-based furniture designer Stephen Kenn; beautiful flowers sit in a vase perfectly laid and minimal, in what seems to be a typical ‘Dutch’ way of flower arrangement; and offbeat magazines are available for Toki dwellers to peruse.

So, yeah the space is carefully thought out, nothing is there by accident but by the same token it doesn’t feel contrived and forced, like a desperate wannabe kid. It’s just a modern cool space with good vibes and quality goods. Will certainly be hanging here when I visit Amsterdam again. Oh yeah and it has free Wifi. Win.

FOOD & SERVICE

My San Francisco coffee snob of a friend was satisfied with the standard of the coffee and I was very happy with the macha tea I ordered – the earthy tones were really strong and warming. I ordered a piece of cake (pastries come from a local patisserie Petit Gâteau) as a companion to my macha tea and this combo pleased me very much indeed. Flink is all about curating interesting quality goods from independent retailers across the globe e.g their roasted coffee comes from Bonanza in Berlin, the beer from Crate Brewery in Hackney Wick, London and teas are from Bellocq Tea Atelier in Brooklyn.

VIBE

Super chilled, super cool.
