Good breakfast joint in a foliage rich conservatory

LOCATION

On Brushfield Street in Spitafields, about an 8mins walk from Liverpool Street.

THE SPACE

Blixen, an all day dining spot, is housed in a former bank and looks a bit like a grand cafe. It has an elegant yet cool feel to it, with a conservatory at the back and outdoor bar, both rich with foliage. Apparently there is also a bar and private function room downstairs. The space is quite versatile catering for small and large groups alike.

FOOD & SERVICE

I actually stumbled upon Blixen when I was in Brick Lane late one morning and ended up having breakfast here. I sat in the conservatory area on one of the communal round tables (which had a tree sprouting out from the middle) and ordered the trout with avocado and poached eggs on toast. As I cut into the egg, the yolk poured out gloriously and when combined with all the other elements on the plate, it was a delicious forkful indeed. The smoked trout brought the required salt to the dish and overall I was very satisfied. I couldn’t resist ordering a dessert and went for the clementine and chocolate rum cremeux with hazelnut ice cream – dense chocolate goodness – which rounded off the meal nicely. I’d definitely like to check it out for lunch or dinner one day and also try out their cocktails.

VIBE

Mixed crowd here. It looks quite chichi but it’s actually very relaxed and has a buzzy nice vibe to it.

MOOLAH

For a breakfast plate and a dessert I paid just under £18.
