DIANE ARBUS @ THE TATE MODERN

I was bummed to have missed an exhibition of Diane Arbus at the V&A a few years ago, so naturally I’m excited that the Tate Modern is currently featuring some of her work in its Artists Rooms (to view for no pennies at all).

I love the rawness of the images she captured, the intensity, the sympathy she had for her subjects without patronizing them. Her photographs of couples are splendid. I particularly admire the photograph of ‘A young man and his pregnant wife in Washington Square Park,NYC (1965)’ – it is a quiet yet strong display of defiance and brings to the fore of my mind the Loving vs Virginia case.
