OTTOLENGHI

A slightly overpriced but sensational deli

LOCATION

The Ottolenghi I’ve been to the most is the one in Notting Hill on Ledbury Road but I’ve also been to the one near Liverpool Street a fair few times (which is more of a dining destination – they serve up cooked breakfasts and you can make dinner reservations here. There are other Ottolenghis – one in Islington (cooked breakfast and dinner also available here) and the other in Belgravia.

THE SPACE

The Ottolenghis I’ve been to are light, bright spaces and the colourful bar of foodstuffs is an extremely welcoming and enticing sight. I’ve only ever eaten in once, at the Belgravia branch which has a shared round table at the back of the deli and a few sitting spots outside in a sort of courtyard space. I would say try the bigger Ottolenghis if you want to eat in.

FOOD & SERVICE

Set up in 2002 by Yotam Ottolenghi (who also owns Nopi) this group of delis has garnered a bit of a cult following. The offering is delightful but be prepared to part with a few bob. Their rainbow salads, meats and fish dishes are delicious; just eat everything, you can’t go wrong. Special shout out to their shakshuka (damnnnn!!!) and desserts – their flourless chocolate cake is sublime as is their vanilla cheesecake, topped off with caramel and a spattering of divine candied macadamia nuts.

VIBE

Very low key and laid back. Reckon the Liverpool Street and Highbury branches get buzzy in the evening.

MOOLAH

It ain’t cheap but it’s very good deli food, so I willingly hand over my cash. Expect to spend around £20 for a box of salad (incl. a main like a salmon fillet) and a sweet treat.

THE TAKE OUT

Fab deli food with prices to match. Everything tastes as gorgeous as they look, so you won’t be disappointed. Their desserts are a necessity in your life. A fave.
