ANGLOTHAI

Anglo. Thai . Marylebone

Anglo. Thai . Marylebone

AngloThai: it pretty much does what it says on the tin and no, that is not a derogatory description. Sometimes, simple is good. AngloThai, basically looks to Thailand for dish inspiration, using produce from the British Isles.

The anticipation around this opening was high and my goodness, AngloThai knocked it out the park. To kick start things, we were served an amuse- bouche; a spicy broth that was perfectly balanced and an exciting taste of what was to come. Then we ordered some carlingford oysters with sea buckthorn & fermented chilli – another hit.

Following this was the Brixham crab, Exmoor caviar & coconut ash cracker. Wow. This is undoubtedly the star dish, for me at least, at Anglothai. 10 10 10 across the board. My friend and I then shared the grilled wildfarmed bread with shrimp butter & Cornish shellfish. Tip: devour immediately, whilst warm.

We ordered the Nibiru x AngloThai , Aubretia collaboration wine (fun fact: this collab is named after the children of the couple behind AngloThai). We didn’t realise we had x2 carafes until the bill came lol. Certainly goes down easy. No regrets.

On to the larger plates: we ordered the wok fried long aubergine, sweet basil & soy cured yolk. Yes yes yes. This we had alongside the wholegrain spelt with long peppercorn & laab spice and the Windsor Estate venison massaman & flourish herb salad. They sang in unison and it was all really satisfying and more-ish.

Anglothai is intentional around locally sourced produce, so there’s no rice on the menu. Instead they’ve opted for ancient grains like spelt. I’m not gonna lie I wasn’t super excited about ordering spelt just because I can’t remember any delicious past experiences but I must say, this was really good (and filling!).

Not to say this crown prince honey pumpkin cake was bad by any measure; it just wasn’t my favourite thing on the menu and I’d probably opt for something else next time.

I will never understand why people spend their money on flashy restaurants with bad menus, when places like this exist. Oh and we didn’t even know we were the last people in the restaurant until it was closing…not once did they hurry us. I mean I think we were also just lucky because it wasn’t fully booked that night but I can’t imagine it will stay that way.

I loved everything about AngloThai: the food & wine, the service and space. I will certainly return.
