MOUNTAIN

Fire Cooking. Brat's Sibling . Soho

Fire Cooking. Brat’s Sibling . Soho

I had an early sitting at Mountain on Beak St last night, with a friend I hadn’t seen in ages – we nestled into our chairs at 5pm, as that was the only time available. Mountain is from the Super 8 team (Smoking Goat, Kiln, Brat).

This space by 7pm was filled to the brim, up until I imagine closing time. On a Mon night both upstairs AND downstairs. 100 covers in total I believe. The restaurant business is GRUELLING, so it’s great to see Mountain thrive like this. It’s had many amazing reviews by respected restaurant critics and it’s incredibly difficult to score a reservation in the evening, at a time you actually want to eat.

However, if you want to hear from an ordinary punter’s POV, someone who just enjoys food and dining out, who doesn’t claim to be a connoisseur in any way shape or form, who has spent their own money eating here, feel free to keep reading:

The Grilled sobrassada & a serving of balloon bread were my favourite plates of the evening. I also really enjoyed the Eva Fricke Trocken Riesling, 2022 that was recommended.

I was excited about the oxtail but truthfully I found the sauce teetered on the bland end of the scale.

Mountain is not cheap (nor should it or can it afford to be – a corner piece building in a prime Soho location ain’t gonna pay for itself). The asparagus and wild garlic salad we ordered was 20 quid. Cooking over fire is an integral part of this kitchen, like Tomos Parry’s other much lauded spot in Shoreditch, Brat. We ordered the plate of duck leg and breast with wood fired rice. It was all nice enough but ultimately that’s the slight issue – it didn’t set my world ablaze. I will say, we did leave absolutely stuffed and didn’t even order desserts ! So, I didn’t feel short changed in that respect.

The service was knowledgeable, efficient and laid back. As it’s such a busy restaurant, expect to be moved on – no lingering stays here, which is fine. When we were nearing the end of our meal, they did offer us a seat on a high communal table to round off our night.

Overall, on a personal level, I didn’t love the food and so it’s unlikely I’ll return for a full meal – I might go in for wine and snacks. However, as mentioned previously, many a restaurant critic think it’s brilliant, so perhaps go and make up your own mind.
