Decent restaurant chain from the Hawksmoor lot
Erm, these guys got a zero rating from Hackney Council and have subsequently shut down. A ZERO. Gosh damn.
The Foxlow I went to was in Stoke Newington, a short bus ride away from my home. They’ve got a few more locations spread across town: one in Clerkenwell, Balham and Chiswick, growing what would appear to be a ‘chain’ of neighbourhood restaurants.
Foxlow has adopted the Midcentury modern aesthetic for its restaurants. The Stoke Newington one I visited was quite a large space comprising the main restaurant atop, with a further dining space in the basement, which had a few booths dotted around the edge. There’s also a small terrace for al fresco dining in the summer.
FOOD & SERVICE
When I first visited, I only had something small to eat. I went straight to the mains ordering the Foxlow fried chicken with habanero vinegar which was pretty good. Since Foxlow is spawned from the Hawksmoor lot, they pride themselves in offering great meat. Beyond the steak offering, it’s a pretty balanced menu with a decent showing of fish and veggie options.
I revisited in Feb 2016 for brunch when my mate and I couldn’t be arsed to queue for The Good Egg, about a 2mins walk away from Foxlow. I ordered the deep fried chicken and waffles with a fried egg on a top and side serving of gravy – I proceeded to wolf it all down and regretted that decision the rest of the day; ended up feeling so ill.
I ain’t gonna diss it because it was everything you’d expect from junk food like this and it was entirely my fault feeling ill; I should have stopped when I knew I’d reached my limit but greed generally tends to override my rational thoughts! Service is mixed at Foxlow – some of the staff are good, others not so much; definitely room for improvement in this department.
Foxlow seems to attract hip attractive peeps in their mid 20s and above. Probably made up mostly of locals. Cool laid back vibe.
I actually think the price points are reasonable. You could comfortably eat a full meal with starters, main, pudding and a glass of vino for under £40 incl service. I only spent £26 when I dined here but I did only have a glass of wine, a main, and shared a side and pudding.
